Miami, Florida — The Haitian American Leadership Initiative (HALI) expresses its profound disappointment and deep concern over the judicial decision allowing the Trump Administration to move forward with ending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for approximately 350,000 Haitian nationals while legal challenges continue.
This deeply troubling decision threatens to uproot hundreds of thousands of law-abiding individuals who have built their lives in the United States, raised families, paid taxes, started businesses, and made significant contributions to the nation’s economy and communities. Haitian TPS holders serve in essential industries including healthcare, education, hospitality, construction, and transportation.
The decision is especially difficult to reconcile given that the U.S. Department of State continues to maintain its highest travel advisory—Level 4: Do Not Travel—for Haiti due to widespread gang violence, kidnappings, political instability, and the collapse of critical public institutions. If Haiti remains unsafe for American citizens to visit, it is difficult to justify forcing legally protected Haitians to return under such conditions.
This is far more than an immigration issue—it is a humanitarian one. Behind every TPS designation are families, children, churches, employers, and communities now facing profound uncertainty. Many American-born children could face separation from their parents or relocation to a nation enduring one of the most severe humanitarian crises in the Western Hemisphere.
HALI extends its sincere appreciation to the Congressional Haiti Caucus, members of Congress, advocacy organizations, faith leaders, immigration attorneys, and all allies who continue to stand with the Haitian community in defense of justice and human dignity.
We respectfully urge the United States Senate and policymakers to pursue compassionate, lawful solutions that preserve family unity, protect vulnerable populations, and recognize the extraordinary realities facing Haiti.
While this decision has left many Haitian families heartbroken, we refuse to abandon hope. Justice may be delayed, but it must never be forsaken. HALI remains committed to advocating for policies that reflect America’s enduring values of fairness, compassion, and human dignity.
